Jean Béraud

Jean Béraud

Jean Béraud was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, with his twin sister Mélanie. His father, who was a sculptor, probably worked on the site of St. Isaac's Cathedral at that time. After his father's death in 1853, his mother, Geneviève Eugénie Jacquin, returned to Paris with her four children.

He was educated at the Lycée Bonaparte, then was a student of Léon Bonnat at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He exhibited for the first time at the Salon in 1872. In 1876, he achieved success with his painting "The Return of the Funeral" and, in 1878, he presented "Ballet Scene". He was awarded a 3rd medal in 1882 and a 2nd medal in 1883.

In 1883, he drew an illustration entitled "Le Viveur" for Jean-Louis Dubut de Laforest's play, "Le Rêve d 'un Viveur". This drawing was published in the collection of the play.

In 1889, he was awarded a gold medal at the Salon des Artistes Français and exhibited at the Exposition Universelle in Paris. He became one of the main painters of Parisian life during the Belle Époque.

In 1890, he co-founded the Société nationale des beaux-arts with artists such as Auguste Rodin, Ernest Meissonier and Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, of which he became the vice-president.

He made illustrations for the covers of the Figaro illustrated between 1890 and 1896.

Jean Béraud witnessed the duel between Marcel Proust and Jean Lorrain at Meudon in February

Gen Paul

Gen Paul

Eugène Paul grew up in Montmartre, at 96 rue Lepic. It is on this street that many artists have lived. From an early age, he began drawing and painting. His mother worked as an embroidererer, and his father, who was a musician in cabarets, died when he was ten years old.

At first, he learned the trade of making decorative furniture.

Eugène Paul was a upholsterer, but World War I broke out and he volunteered for the army on September 11, 1914, for the duration of the war. He was sent to the 311th Infantry Regiment on 19 September, but ten days later he was evacuated as he was too weak. After being treated in the hospital and then convalescing at home, he did not return to the front until June 7, 1915. On June 24, in Regniéville, he was seriously wounded in the right knee by a bullet while "at his combat post". He had to have his right thigh amputated, leaving only a 19 cm stump that could not be paired. He was awarded the Military Medal on September 3, 1915. In June 1916, he was permanently disqualified from service, and received a disability pension.

Back to civilian life, he started painting again. He became friends with Juan Gris at the Bateau-Lavoir, who helped him a lot. He was also friends with other artists like Leprin and Franck-Will.

He was named a Knight of the Legion of Honor

Henri-Edmond Cross

Henri-Edmond Cross

Henri Edmond Joseph Delacroix was born in Douai, at 15, rue Jean-Bellegambe. His family had a hardware store there. A cousin of his father saw his talent when he was a child and became his guide. He apprenticed in Lille, with Carolus-Duran and Alphonse Colas.

For his first exhibition at the Salon of 1881, he decided to translate his surname "Delacroix" into English "Cross". It was so as not to be confused with Eugène Delacroix, and it was an idea of his friend the painter François Bonvin.

At first, Henri-Edmond Cross painted in the naturalistic style. Then he moved closer to the Neo-Impressionist painters. He shared their anarchist political ideas.

In 1893, he married Irma Clare. She was divorced from the writer Hector France and was of British origin. Cross had painted her in 1891 in a portrait called "Madame Hector France", which is now in the Musée d 'Orsay.

From 1896, he worked for the newspaper "Les Temps Nouveaux" by Jean Grave. He gave her drawings, lithographs, and watercolors for the tombolas that helped the newspaper and its publications.

He made a lithograph for the novel "La Gennia" by John-Antoine Nau. It was a particular spirit novel. He then made two more color lithographs. The first was published by Ambroise Vollard in 1897 ("La Promenade"), and the second appeared in the journal Pan in 1898 ("Les

Albert Dubois-Pillet

Albert Dubois-Pillet

Albert Dubois-Pillet was born in Paris. His father, Jules Sylvain Dubois, was a wealthy merchant, and his mother, Sophie Hortense Pillet, was the sister of an auctioneer named Charles Pillet. He was educated in Toulouse, then at the Special Military School of Saint-Cyr. During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, he served in the 1st Flying Regiment of the Imperial Guard. After the defeat of Sedan, he was imprisoned in Paderborn, Germany.

He returned to Toulouse in April 1871 and in May of the same year fought in the regular army during the Bloody Week, which ended the Paris Commune. He was promoted to lieutenant on 21 May 1872 and was assigned to the 90th Line Infantry Regiment. On May 8, 1876, he became a captain in the 77th Infantry Regiment. The same year, he was transferred to Poitiers. In 1878, he applied to join the Republican Guard, which he was granted, and he returned to Paris on November 11, 1879.

In 1884, he exhibited a painting entitled "Dead Child" at the Salon des Indépendants. Émile Zola was inspired by this work for a passage from his novel "L 'Œuvre", published in 1886. Albert Dubois-Pillet was one of the co-founders of the Société des Indépendants. There he met Paul Signac and Georges Seurat, with whom he became friends.

He was part of the pointillist movement and discussed painting and color with Signac and Seurat. Jules Christophe

In 1904, he met the Offenstadt brothers, who published magazines for youth. They hired him as a draftsman for their weekly newspaper L'Illustré, marking the beginning of his artistic career with the publication of L 'Histoire du Sire de Ciremolle.

After the end of this review, he regularly contributed to other publications, including Le Petit Illustré amusant, military magazines such as La Vie en panties rouge and La Vie de Garnison, as well as Polichinelle and Le Petit Illustré Amusant.

In 1908, he became the principal draftsman of L'Epatant. It was for this publication that he created Les Pieds nickelés in issue 9, dated 4 June 1908. He designed 1948 boards for this series. At the same time, he continued to work for magazines such as La Vie de Garnison, mon Copain du Dimanche (in 1911) and Le Pêle-Mêle (in 1924).

In 1924, he stopped drawing Les Pieds nickelés to devote himself to the creation of Bibi Fricotin in Le Petit Illustré. The following year, in 1925, he created Les
